Ted M. Johnson Empowerment Square Community Development Corporation is the premier catalyst for changing lives and revitalizing communities.

Collectively conquering our community!

Compassion Square is a geographic location of an industrious, conscientious, prosperous community from Chester Avenue to Union Avenue and Brundage Lane to California Avenue in Bakersfield, California as the nucleus hub.

In 1986, the late Pastor Ted M. Johnson identified Compassion Square Christian Center as a community which should experience immediate “compassion”, love in action.  Taking occupancy, doing business and causing people to arise from obscurity to light is the champion and conquering spirit cultivated in Compassion Square.

Mission

It is through the TMJ, CDC that the work within Compassion Square is accomplished. TMJ empowers individuals to live productive lives, through economic development, comprehensive education and family enrichment.

Motto

Programs of Ted M. Johnson

Pastor Ted M. Johson

The 48 years of Pastor Ted M. Johnson were marked by his commitment to God, his family, church, and community.  Born in Oklahoma, raised in Bakersfield, Pastor Ted was the eldest of 13 children, a product of the local school system, and a graduate of East Bakersfield High School.  In 1964, he was drafted into the United States Army where he valiantly served and was awarded an honorable discharge in 1968.  After an honorable discharge, he continued his education at California State College where he received both a Bachelors degree in Sociology and a Masters degree in Counseling.  He also attended San Jose Bible College.  He held a lifetime teaching credential and taught school for 13 years, ten at Foothill High and three at South High.

Pastor Ted was married to Martha Johnson for 25 years.  He was the father of three daughters to whom he imparted love, compassion, and the vision for helping others.  He worked extensively in the community and was instrumental in bringing people of all races and walks of life together.  An active member in numerous organizations, Pastor Ted served on many boards including Kern Adult Literacy Council, Teen Challenge, and the Police Liaison Committee to name a few.  As a man of compassion he believed he was blessed to give back to the community. As he often stated, “you only pass this way once, and the work you do must speak for you.”

Pastor Teds Vision

“If you don’t go you won’t know.”  Pastor Ted was a man of knowledge and desperately tried to share knowledge with others.  Believing knowledge is power;  Pastor Ted realized that for some, the ability to go and get knowledge may have been eluded.  Hence, the vision of “the square” a hub of knowledge embedded in various entities;  a square of empowerment, transforming an individual from what is to what can be.
